How to Draw Male Eyes
Just like a character’s hair, their eyes say a lot about your
character. Just the shape, size, or even the color of the character’s
eyes can say a lot. A male’s eyes are usually smaller than a female’s to
give them a harder look. Male eyes are thinner and more rectangular. The
irises are usually smaller and have no shine to them to show the
hardness of the male character. Before you start drawing your
character’s eyes, make sure you have the eyes proportioned correctly. If
it helps, draw a line down the face to split the face in half. Next,
draw a horizontal line where you want the mouth to be and above it, the
line where you want the eyes to be. Now that you have the basic line,
you can draw the character’s eyes.
To start your character’s eyes, use either a triangular shape or a
rectangular shape. After finishing this and figuring where you want the
corner of the eye to be, draw the iris of the eye using a circle. The
position of the circle depends on the direction the character is
looking. There are different methods on how to draw pupils; it all
depends on the artist. The position and the size of the iris and the
pupil depend on the angle the character was drawn. If the character is
looking a certain direction, make the lines around the eye thicker to
make the direction of the eye clearer.
Another aspect of the eyes an artist needs to consider is how thick the
eyelashes are going to be. Males don’t usually have long, thick lashes
so the lashes shouldn’t be very prominent.
The eyelids and muscles are also to be considered. If the eyelids are
not shown, the eyes can look bland and appear flat with no depth or
detail.
Finally you’ll want to consider your character’s eyebrows. The placement
of the eyebrows can show different emotions and can change the mood of
your drawing entirely, so be careful of how your character’s eyes look
compared to the rest of the drawing. If you want your character to have
a happy look, make his eyebrows arched. For an angry look, angle the
eyelids towards each other. Or maybe you want your character to look
confused, so arch one eyebrow and angle the other.
If you want the eyes to be closed, you still have to consider the
eyelids and the eyelashes just like a regular eye. However, you need to
make the flat line for the closed eye thicker since you are combining
the upper and lower lashes.
Now you have completed the eyes, get to work on the rest of the face and
the rest of your unique character! |
