How to Draw Male Hair

The hair of a male anime character says a lot about the personality of that character. A long and unkempt hairstyle will give the character a lazy personality, just like a short and spiked hairstyle will give your character a bad boy look. The color can also say a lot about the character just the same as the style of hair. The unkempt hairstyle usually matches with a dark blonde or a light brown. The short and spiked hairstyle looks better with more dramatic colors like pure black or bleach blonde. Characters that have funky hair colors tend to have funky personalities. If you are creating a character that happens to be a villain with an icy personality, then use an ice blue color. If you are making a character with a fiery personality, then make his hair a fiery red or even an orange color. Black always goes good with mysterious characters, and white goes well with both older characters and young children with light hair. Color isn’t everything though, the style is very important too, and knowing how to draw hair is very important.

After you have drawn the initial head and face of your male character, draw a light horizontal line nearly one-third down the character’s face to create your character’s hairline. Unlike a female character, you will not draw long, front bangs for your male character. Some males with longer hair can have bangs, but assuming you are drawing a male with shorter hair, you don’t have to draw the v’s that are necessary for drawing bangs. There will be less detail in a male’s hair, so you will create the mass of the hair as one unit, not parting it like you would on a female character. Males usually have no part in their hair, so parting it would be highly unnecessary. Next, draw vertical lines extending from the character’s crown to indicate the hair. If you want the hair to look raggedy and choppy, make the ends of the hair tapered. If the hair is longer, make the strands of hair longer if you wish. If the hair is a lot shorter, than just make the area where the hair would be shaded to make the hair look very short. Finish off your character with spikes going different directions to indicate motion, or just give his hair a funky look.

Males don’t usually have accessories that they put in their hair, but if you wish to place any type of accessory in the character’s hair, feel free to do so, after all, it’s your creation!
